Love and Fort Necessity

Journey Through Fort Necessity

Within Keri Smith’s book, The Imaginary Word of… sits a prompt entitled, “The Database.” Smith asks readers what kind of world they would like to inhabit, then provides a list of categories in which readers are to list their favorite things: Books, movies, colors, materials, places, people. The prompt really got me thinking: Who are my favorite people? What are my favorite places?

Not to sound cheesy or be THAT person, but one of my favorite people is my beautiful partner, Katie. She came into my life at a very unexpected time. A time where I was unsure of whether or not I wanted to be in a relationship. After about a week of texting and Snapchatting, we decided to meet up and get coffee. After that first initial date, I was fucking hooked. I’ve never been around someone where I felt like I could be open and honest about my views, opinions, quirks, and even myself. She accepts me for who I am, what I’ve done, and who I want to be. We love watching each other grow and work towards our goals. It’s something I hadn’t experienced before. I love her so fucking much and I can’t wait to see where the future takes us.

As a double major in both History and Creative Writing, I like to incorporate my love of history into my writing. I love visiting different National Parks, exploring different historic sights, and learning more than a textbook can teach me. I’ve always felt that visiting a historic sight is more educationally impactful than reading about it in a textbook or an article written by a historian. One of my favorite sights is Fort Necessity in Farmington, Pennsylvania. Fort Necessity was once a battlefield during the French and Indian War in he 1750’s. Surprisingly enough, there is no actual fort at Fort Necessity. After General George Washington surrendered to the French, the fort was burned to the ground. The battle at Fort Necessity was Washington’s only surrender of the war. I spent about two hours at this sight, taking everything in, reading every sign that I could, even taking the virtual, pre-recorded, walking tour. Experiences like this push me to achieve my ultimate career goal: a Park Ranger for the National Park Service.
